"Sweat It Out" with Dancing Cante

There are so many reasons that people turn to fitness or a healthy lifestyle. I think that society would have us believe that it is all about the aesthetics, that people are motivated to do anything that resembles itself as “healthy” because they want amazing abs, or legs that demand a second , look but, so many times it is a lot deeper than that. For some, fitness can be your saving grace mentally more than physically. It can be that key component that makes everything better, that brings your peace, and that feeds your soul. That’s the vibe you get when you experience Dancing Cante. With her, it is less about a look and more about a feel - a feel that it would be selfish of me not to share with all of you. Brace yourself.

What is your favorite way to sweat and what made you fall in love with it?

I share an equal love for running, yoga, and lifting. My mom is a runner and she sort of passed down that passion. Yoga came to me at a point in my life when it was critical for me to find self-love and since then it has completely changed my life! I have been completely self-taught, my first time being in a yoga class I was actually teaching the class!!  Lifting came about a year after yoga, and for those days that you just need to feel powerful and release stress nothing beats pushing weight!

How long have you been dedicated to living a #HEALTHYLIVINGLIFESTYLE and what exactly helped you decide to make that change?

It's been about 3 years now. At 21 I went through a big breakup/heartbreak, two weeks after that I adopted my 5-year old niece and a month after that I was in a really bad car wreck. While I was still hurt, I wasn't able to exercise or do much really at all and I absolutely hated that feeling, but it made me realize what all I was taking for granted. I made a choice to better myself and to be a healthy role model for my niece.

What is your absolute favorite workout gear brand and why?

Honestly, I really have no preference. A work out is a workout. As long as I can get a good sweat, I’m happy.

What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

Nike Flex are my all time favorite for running!

What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

We all have days that are hard to find motivation and days when we want to just eat everything in sight.  On these days what helps me most is motivating someone else. When you realize that someone else is looking up to you, and someone always is, you will push yourself harder.

What is the motto that you live by? This could be a saying or quote.

"Life is tricky because it has a silent E"  - Layla Monay

When my niece was learning to read she said this.. and for me it just spoke volumes. Life can be so hard at times and so frustrating but I always think back to this little saying because it reminds me that life is far simpler then we make it seem. So live and spread love!

If you could give advice to anyone who is struggling to transition to a healthy living, lifestyle, what would you say?

Take baby steps, and eventually you will find yourself there, sweaty, and smiling! Don't beat yourself up on the days you fail, don't let a bad day be an excuse to have a bad week. You're strong and able you just have to be willing to see that side of yourself. ♥

How did you come up with your playlist name?

I was not creative at all when it came to my playlist names. I have " Running" "Yoga" and "Lifting". My lazy took over.

What songs are you rocking out to?

For running the band "Wyldlife" is my go to!

For yoga I play a big variety, from "Led Zeppelin" to "The Weekend" to "Norah Jones" to "Shakira" haha just depends on the day!

It’s been a long time, we shouldn’t have left you….(if you didn’t catch that reference, we seriously can not be friends). But, on a serious note our “Sweat It Out” series has gotten a facelift as we have shifted through submission after submission until we’ve found some pretty awesome fitness inspiration for 2017. Each and every one of our features have a pretty good ear for music and have curated a playlist that will keep you motivated during your sweaty sessions.

It is easy for a pretty face to catch your eye but it takes a little bit more to grab your attention and to deem someone “fitspo” worthy. In our eyes, Kristina Jimenez shines above the outer appearances and is someone who embodies a love for fitness that can definitely motivate you on days when you just don’t want to get up and get active. Hopefully she has the same affect on you!

What is your favorite way to sweat and what made you fall in love with it?

Running. I fell in love with running when I was a kid and have continued to love the sport since! I run every day and it is honestly the best "me" time I could ask for! Whether I need some time to clear my mind, get some steam out because I'm stressed about something, or need some creative inspiration, running is the best way to get get through life's many moments!

How long have you been dedicated to living a #HEALTHYLIVINGLIFESTYLE and what exactly helped you decide to make that change?

I really started caring about health and nutrition once I left high school. I always ran cross country and once I found out I was pretty good at running, I started caring more about what I put in my body to enhance my performance. As a result my body became more toned, and my last year of high school I became a model for Abercrombie Brands. I was picked up by my first talent agency Heyman Talent, and fell in love with acting and entertainment ever since.

What is your absolute favorite workout gear brand and why?

I love all yoga apparel (especially Lululemon), Nike clothing and shoes, and I love Avia apparel! They have great prices and offer some really cute pieces.

What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

I really like Nike Women's Zoom shoes and I love Mizuno USA shoes for any type of long distance running!

What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

It's weird but, I never have days where I don't want to go outside and run or get a good workout in. My body needs to get the energy out! When it comes to eating right, I do splurge and eat sweets every now and then (I LOVE dark chocolate) but I eat all things in moderation and know if I eat poorly, my body will feel poorly in the end. Thinking about that end feeling is really what keeps me motivated to eat healthy.

What is the motto that you live by?

You only have one life to live. Live life to it's fullest everyday! Step outside of your comfort zone, go after your dreams, and always spread light and love to others!

If you could give advice to anyone who is struggling to transition to a healthy living, lifestyle, what would you say?

It is not as hard and daunting as it may seem. You don't need to starve yourself or workout to exhaustion- you can still eat the amount you want and when you want but make sure you are eating healthy non processed foods, and workout until your body feels well trained! Baby steps is key and finding a good community to motivate you is also key.

How did you come up with your playlist name?

I listen to Spotify workout radio. They have a ton of great running playlists and they are super motivational, so I decided to title my playlist " Get Motivated".

What songs are you rocking out to?

I like upbeat pop (anything you can dance to), EDM, and House music.

What is your favorite way to sweat and what made you fall in love with it?

Pole Fitness! I fell in love with the challenge, mental and upper body strength needed in pole fitness about a year ago! A few years back, a friend a mine who graduated from my college used to post her pole videos on Facebook. Although I wasn't sold on the idea of pole fitness yet, I loved how excited she was about pole competitions and eventually becoming a teacher. I guess subconsciously I was motivated, impressed and interested, but didn't act on it until last year. I reached out to her and she got me started at Zensual Dance Fitness where I was taught the foundation of pole fitness and all of its gloriousness! I've recently transitioned to another studio that's closer to my house, Mind, Body and Pole in Arlington, TX and am still going strong!

How long have you been dedicated to living a #HEALTHYLIVINGLIFESTYLE and what exactly helped you decide to make that change?

I decided 3 years ago that I needed to get it together. I started eliminating foods and things not healthy for me like the amount of dairy I was consuming, the soda I was drinking, the processed foods I was eating and the ridiculous amount of chips I was eating! I started with baby steps and I still am! I'm not a believer in all or nothing, so I've been gradually moving towards more vegan and plant based things. Even the things I use on my body. I tell folks I have vegan tendencies, lol! It makes me proud that I can eat fish and chicken or even go without meat some days and still be "satisfied." It makes me happy that I've replaced Lays potato chips with grapes and tangerines. I never would've imagined that this would be my journey!

When it comes to fitness: I honestly tried the running thing, the gym thing, the dance class thing and I was honestly bored. I was playing recreational volleyball which I totally enjoyed, but there was just something about being able to hold my body weight (160 pounds) upside down with my legs extended! It's a feeling like NO OTHER! Like I have a real-life membership and haven't been this dedicated to anything fitness-related in a long while.

What is your absolute favorite workout gear brand and why?

(1) I love the Danskin Seamless Sports Bra it's the most comfortable sports bra I've ever felt in my life! Like I wear them on regular days especially in the summer with all of the cut out and flowy shirts and dresses.

(2) Dry hands Pole Grip

(3) Danskin Now Printed Performance Biker Tights

What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

Knee high socks and leg warmers! For pole, when doing floor-work the socks and/or leg warmers help tremendously. With pole, we do everything bare foot, unless you're doing a routine that requires pole shoes (strippers heels) for sex appeal, heel clacks or slide variations across the floor.

What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

I'm motivated by learning new moves and I know with pole if I take too many days off I'll lose my grip and lose some of my flexibility. Since I'm already limited in the flexibility area, it's good for me if I have some consistency.

What is the motto that you live by? This could be a saying or quote.

"Real change starts in the mind" "Take Baby Steps" and "Celebrate everything! A small victory is still a victory!"

If you could give advice to anyone who is struggling to transition to a healthy living, lifestyle, what would you say?

I would say take baby steps. Literally baby steps.... for 6 months I worked on not drinking soda and not eating red meat, for the next 6 months I worked on not eating chips, for the next 6 months I worked on reducing cheese on my salad and not drinking milk. This process helped me set small goals that I could really reach instead of doing it all at once.

My goal now is to naturally slim without having to live in the gym.....which feels like a slow death to me. Once I've mastered this, I will feel like I've succeeded! I'll feel proud that I did it my way and during a time frame that was realistic for me.

Also, you have to create a fitness routine that's true to you. Pole fitness satisfies both parts of my personality, the hippie free side of me and the ratchet parts of me who loves to dance, lol. You can't ask for a better combination!

How did you come up with your playlist name?

SHOW ME, SHOW YOU. I chose this name because self-confidence was something I've always struggled with. I've been on mission to come out of my shell and prove to myself that I can do life and pole fitness with fluidity, with grace and with a little sex appeal.

What songs are you rocking out to?

These songs that make me want to pole flow:

Alina Baraz & Galimatias: Show Me

Corinne Bailey Rae: Hey, I won't break your heart

Rihanna: Kiss It Better

Jessica Ware: Say You Love Me

And these songs that make me want to TWERK SOMETHIN' lol

Migos: Bad and Boujee

50 Cent and Chris Brown: I'm the Man

Dorrough: Bounce That

Kevin Gates: Really Really

Lil Ronny: CIRCLE Ft. Mykfresh & Yung Nation

What is your favorite way to sweat?

Dance, Run/Spin, Lift

How long have you been dedicated to living a #HEALTHYLIVINGLIFESTYLE?

I have always had an athletic background and healthy eating habits. Dance and Wrestling in my youth. Now I compete professional in the IFBB and honored to have been on the 2015 Olympia Stage.

What is your absolute favorite workout gear brand and why?

I’m into Better Bodies athletic gear because it is super comfortable to workout in and I enjoy the high quality of the brand.

What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

I use Asics Gel-Kayano 21.  It is the most supportive shoe I have found and I am only after extreme support and comfort as I am most often in rigorous training seasons.

What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

On days I just don't want to train or eat right I have to find the motivation from a creative source.  We all have days like this. I always remember to allow myself to have an unmotivated day but not to let it last for too long. It’s ok to take a day off and find some clarity.  If you replace the physical training part of your day with mental training then you will never lose. So when unmotivated I spend time in prayer asking for directions and energy and I always receive an answer.

How did you come up with your playlist name?

Deny Yourself: It’s a phrase I repeat to myself. It’s sacrificing your wants for today to find real satisfaction in your tomorrow.

"Sweat It Out": Yoga with Lola

“Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.”

It was that quote that originally caught my eye but, if you have the pleasure of following Yoga with Lola on Instagram you will know that Lola and her profile offer so much more. Lola is a yoga enthusiast working on becoming a certified yoga instructor, which definitely will be an easy task because Lola’s yoga game is on a whole other level!  These, in addition to her dedication to spreading love and light with every post, are just a few of the reasons we feel you’re missing out if you aren’t rockin’ with Lola on the regular. If that isn’t enough to convince you, check out our interview below as well as Lola’s playlist, that is sure to be the soundtrack to your next workout!

Who is Yoga with Lola?

My name is Lola Smith, I am 21 years old and I was born and raised in Cleveland Ohio. I started my lovely yoga journey on January 13th 2015 and I love it more and more each day. I am very passionate about my craft and I truly enjoy giving the knowledge and information that I have to others who are also interested in practicing yoga.

What is your favorite way to sweat?

Rocket yoga defintely makes me sweat the most. I really get a good workout in!

How long have you been dedicated to living a #HEALTHYLIVINGLIFESTYLE?

I have been practicing yoga for one year now and my journey has been simply amazing. Despite the struggles, fails and hard times during it all, see my progress at the end of the day outweighs everything. I took dance classes a year ago and one day my dance instructor asked the students to get in a specific pose for warmups. I wasn't too sure of what we're doing so I asked her questions and she explained to me that we were doing yoga poses. Due to my curiosity I took it upon myself to do more research on yoga and I immediately fell in love. From that day on Yoga became a part of my life.

What is your absolute favorite workout gear brand and why?

Target; sports bras and leggings! They are multi functional, cute and comfy!

What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

I love any type of yoga shoes! Not only are they comfortable, but they support my ankles while practicing too!

What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

Yoga has transformed my life in many ways tremendously, but one thing I struggle with the most was patience. After going deep into my practice and understanding why patience is important for not only Yoga before life as well, I set my ego aside and try something new. Yoga has helped me to relax the mind and body and taught me to love myself even through the struggles.

What is the motto that you live by?

" You have to be odd in order to be number ONE"

If you could give advice to anyone who is struggling to transition to a healthy living, lifestyle, what would you say?

I would tell them to work hard, stay dedicated and never give up! Take things day by day, don't try rushing into it. Eventually you will be able to eliminate the things that are in your way of reaching your goal. My yoga tip for beginners would be to never give up! If you find yourself struggling in certain areas and you feel like it's just not going to work, stop what you are doing and breathe. Understand that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. Work at it daily, look for inspirational people and deepen  your research; but most importantly believe in YOU. Know that you are beautiful, you are brilliant and you are powerful! Stay dedicated and motivated and do what makes you happy.

How did you come up with your playlist name?

#NoLimits ... I try to listen to songs that send off encouraging and motivating messages while working out

What songs are you rocking out to?

Good For You (Selena Gomez)

"Sweat It Out" With Sarah

The best part about being a healthy foodie is meeting other health foodies!  I love getting inspiration from the recipes and concoctions that others have developed. Although we can’t mirror someone’s process and expect the exact same results (you’re setting yourself up for disappointment there, folks),  inspiration is something that allows you to grow as an individual by simply finding the awesomeness and adjusting it to meet YOUR needs and YOUR lifestyle. I thinks that is pretty amazing and I think Sarah is even more so!

Sarah recently graduated from college and is the #BossChick behind The Cutting Veg. The name alone would suggest that she is a vegetarian but, she is actually a pescaterian whose diet restrictions worked in her favor by forcing her to love “real food” and make creative meals consisting of mainly whole grains, vegetables, beans, and fruits.  Now, let’s vibe and become better acquainted with this health foodie extraordinaire!

1. Name: Sarah

2. Age: 22

3. Hometown: Currently: Princeton, NJ. In my heart: New York, NY

4. What is your favorite way to sweat?

I am SUCH a huge runner. Up until recently, I have been running outside a whole lot, but now I have to make the dreaded transition to treadmill running. Nothing says perfect Saturday then running on the boardwalk/hudson river/body of water. And of course the massive brunch afterwards.

5. How long have you been dedicated to living a #HEALTHYLIVINGLIFESTYLE?

My senior year of high school, I tore my ACL. I had done ballet for most of my life, so the injury was devastating. To recover, I began biking and running. It was not until then, when I realized exercising on most days and eating right, made me FEEL like my best self.

6. What is your absolute favorite workout gear brand and why?

You're going to call me crazy here, but I really love the athletic clothing I get from Old Navy. As a recent college graduate who has a bust too small for most sports bras, I find their products to be the best cost/benefit trade-off. Oh and I am a Nike Tempo running shorts fanatic. I swear I have 10 pairs.

7. What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

Asics are my go to, specifically the Gel Noosa Tri-9. Asics are so comfortable for my wide, small feet and the gel noosa in particular make running easy on my shins and knees. They're lightweight, supportive, and they SLIP ON which makes waking up in the morning for a run SO much easier.

Image Asics

Image Asics

8. What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

Setting out my clothes the night before and having a KILLER alarm makes me motivated to go for my 6 AM run. Currently, my alarm is Who Run the World (Girls) by Beyonce. It never fails to get me up regardless of how tired I am. Is it because I went to a woman's college? Possibly.

9. How did you come up with your playlist name?

My playlist name is Sweet It Out. When I first started running, I did so because of my ACL, but also because I wanted to be able to eat more. Now that I exercise most of the time, I find I actually enjoy it solely for the endorphin high. But the extra oatmeal brown butter chocolate chip cookie doesn't hurt.

Note on Mirrors: This is normally the song I run to on repeat. I have been doing this for YEARS, people. I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to stress too much about my music choices when I'm trying to maneuver through crowded NYC streets, ya feel?

Since I wear workout clothes more than anything else, I don't like to spend too much money on that. I get a majority of my gear from Old Navy. Good quality, fits great, and has bargains. I get my sports bras from Walmart and sometimes they have shirts that are a great steal. Both places have that wick quality to their clothing so when you sweat it pulls moisture away from the body so sweat can evaporate quickly.

7. What is your absolute favorite workout shoe and why?

Nike Pegasus. Fell in love with these shoes when I became serious with running. My feet are bit flatter so it offers more support. It's lightweight with enough cushion. Most importantly, they are comfy.

8. What motivates you to keep going on days that you don’t want to workout and or eat right?

I think about those people who can't work out. Those days that I don't want to work out are the days that I know I need it most. It shifts my body, mind, perspective. I believe that everyone should sweat at least once a day, even if it's for at least 15-20 minutes. Sweat = Medicine. It cleanses and releases toxins and negativity. You can do so much in that time. Do something that gets you moving, pumps the heart rate up, and your breath deeper. When I eat bad consistently that is when I need to ask myself, “Why am I really eating this?” Am I eating to fill a void or numb something that I'm trying to ignore? Is it fear, insecurity, sadness, etc...? I need to re-evaluate myself and my surroundings (for example, who am I hanging out with, etc.)

9. How did you come up with your playlist name?

Coming up with a name is pretty challenging. "Just Do It" Pretty much speaks for itself.

10. What songs are you rocking out to?

Honestly, my music really depends on the type of workout I'm doing. If I'm doing yoga I love listening to M83 or Explosions in the Sky. Weight training I listen to anything from Johnny Cash to Black Eyed Peas, to a little of bit of rock or metal to Drake to Skrillex, and it can keep going. I've started back cycling again. It's a great workout and it's helping rebuild my endurance which I love. I use my core for stability and it has not only helped shape my legs and glutes for my physique competitions, but it's also strength building.

The strength is built by doing intervals, which I do a lot on the bike. I base the rate of speed and degree of effort on the pace based off the tempo or beat of the song. The slower the tempo of the song, the higher degree of effort and slower the pace (strength building) to really FEEL what I'm working in my body while standing on the bike with hinged hips leaning. The higher the tempo the faster my pace (fat burning). My playlist is what I usually play while on the bike.
