Most basketball enthusiasts would say that the WNBA still lacks a certain something that would push it into a mainstream audience like it’s sports brother the NBA. Though the WNBA is full of talented female athletes, it still remains a sport missing significant amounts of fanfare when it comes to the season.

While only one of us follows basketball religiously (raises hand and waves) we both are fans of sports that encourage women to reach their full potential and showcase their abilities so, we were super excited to hear that the Metroplex is now the home of the Dallas Wings, formerly the Tulsa Shock. As the WNBA continues its evolution, this move to Dallas could be a game changer for both the team and it’s new fan base. With a collective bargaining agreement in place until 2021, it’s safe to say that there are big plans and major growth in store for the league in general. But, we’re getting ahead of ourselves and it’s time to celebrate some serious girl power! That said, take a look at the reasons we’re excited for Dallas’ newest franchise.

5 Reasons Why We Are All About The Dallas Wings

1. Flying High With Skylar Diggins.

Diggins is known to average 17.8 points and 5 assists per game and did we mention how freakin gorgeous she is?! Her presence alone could generate ticket sales as the male sports enthusiasts will surely flock to UTA’s arena just to breath in some of the same air as the Notre Dame alum.

2. It’s About Damn Time.

Dallas has not seen a pro women’s basketball team since the 1970’s and 1980’s, with the Dallas Diamonds. Little girls in this growing city NEED this. The Dallas Wings are sure to bring some much needed #Chickspiration to a number of young ladies who are in dire need of a role model re-up. The girls youth basketball camps alone will be on another level, which will be amazing for girls athletics. The DFW metroplex is all about our sports (Dallas Stars, Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks) and it is time for the ladies to get some shine.

3. Competition is King.

It’s no secret that Dallas sports teams are competitive. With a baseball team that drew some of the sport’s highest post-season ratings, an NBA team still basking in the glow of a championship and a football team that is, quite literally, a national treasure - you’d be hard pressed to find any Dallas sports teams that don’t bring the heat of competition. And, according to Skylar, we can expect nothing less from the Wings: "We are the market disrupters," Diggins said. "We are the team that you don't want to play. We're not nice. We're going to be in your face the whole game." GAME. ON.

4. We Support Our Own.

What you know about them Texas girls!? Oh...and a guy. For many of the Dallas Wings, this is homecoming. Head coach Fred Williams lived in South Oak Cliff for part of his childhood. Guard Odyssey Sims was a star at Irving MacArthur and Baylor. Forward Tiffany Jackson-Jones attended Duncanville and the University of Texas, and Forward/center Plenette Pierson is from Houston and attended Texas Tech. How great would it be to give them the greatest welcome back ever!?

5. History Repeating, Perhaps?

This team has a history of winning and winning big. In the WNBA’s 20-year history, this particular franchise won three WNBA championships while in Detroit. The team finished 18–16 this season after battling back to make the playoffs. And, with Skylar Diggins returning after injury and a number of last year’s squad set to play in Arlington the Wings may just be looking to repeat some of their winning history. And that, ladies and gents, would definitely be something to cheer about.
