Fit Chicks: Thanksgiving Edition

With the holidays drawing near we know that it is going to be a battle to stay focused on your health and fitness goals. On top of dropping temps tempting you to stay cozy in the bed versus hitting the gym, we’re also very aware that family holiday time (Hey Thanksgiving…) brings the kind of temptation that has you in line for seconds and thirds before your food coma.  We’ve all been there. So, what is a Fit Chick to do?!  We’re getting a battle plan ready!

While you can’t out train a bad diet, adding an extra workout (or six) to your routine this week won’t hurt and may make you feel a little less guilty about plate number three. Always remember though, balance is key.  Remember that when it comes to both your workouts and your portions. Making sure to stop when your body is full (we promise, the food isn’t going anywhere) is imperative.  Being mindful to avoid drinking your calories at those holiday festivities will also go a long way. So, while we’re going to enjoy our favorite mac and cheese goodness and peach cobblers, water will be the only cool thing in our cup.

Last, but certainly not least, sometimes staying the course on your #HealthyLivingLifestyle requires you to swap out some of those traditional favorites with healthier options.  In order to encourage you in this particular brand of proactive behavior, we’ve picked a few healthy spin options from some of our favorite #FitChicks.  Check out our faves below and let us know what you choose!

Fit Chicks: Thanksgiving For Your Fitness

  1. Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole

I absolutely love Chandler from The H Is For! I check her blog weekly just to get a dose of everything from cool essential oil blends, to her journey to create the perfect gluten free Thanksgiving. So, when we spotted this recipie for one of those holiday faves, gluten free green bean casserole, we had a certified *Otis scream* moment.

    2.   Spiced Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Next up is Anne from Fannetastic Foods. As her healthy holidays option list is endless, it was hard to pick just one. But the one that will definitely be making an appearance at casa de FitXBrit (Channing from CNK Daily is more of a cauliflower mashed potato kind of gal) is the Spiced Mashed Sweet Potatoes!  We love the fact that there is no added sugar in this recipe which just boosts its nutritional value. We’re also pretty sure that my mini, Ms.Peyton,  will absolutely love this!

 3.   Creamy Butternut Squash Macaroni and Cheese

Okay, so let’s be real: mac and cheese is kind of non negotiable. There really is nothing like biting into the gooey cheddery goodness every Thanksgiving, but this year Channing from CNK Daily may be trying something a little different thanks to Kelly over at Eat Yourself Skinny.  This fun twist to the traditional recipe boasts a pretty surprising secret ingredient: Butternut squash.  While we're a bit skeptical on this since we love  some OG mac and cheese, saving  over 500 calories is enough to earn a holiday try.

4.   Healthy Sweet Potato Pie

When the meal is done and you’re ready for dessert, what do you typically reach for during the holidays?  If you’re anything like us, Sweet Potato Pie is always on the menu (often a la mode) and adds that final nail in the naptime coffin.  Lucky for us (and you) we stumbled upon a lighter take on our favorite dessert thanks to Chocolate Covered Katie. While this option isn’t an excuse to down half of the pie by your lonesome, it’s nice to know that a few minor tweaks can make a world of difference.

We hope this short guide was helpful for those of you looking to stay health-conscious this turkey day!  As always, feel free to leave your comments in the section below and please be sure to let us know if you happen to try any of these alternatives!
