5 Benefits Of Adult Coloring And How I'm Rewarding You For Trying It

The fresh smell of a new box of crayons and a box of finely sharpened map pencils were the highlight of my childhood. Little did I know at the time that I was in my therapy box and didn't even know it. Who knew that the therapeutic element that our parents were using to keep us calm and entertained before dinner, would still be relevant as adults, to help take our minds off of the daily pressures of life. I am here for it and have been indulging in color therapy consistently for the last four years.

My timeline is jam-packed with grown-ups on the breaking point of hurting somebody and even themselves because we just don't know how to sit down and breathe or take a moment for ourselves.

So what are some ways coloring can benefit adults? Here are my top 5 benefits:

  1. You can take this hobby with you anywhere you go, which makes it super accessible.

  2. Creation over consumption is always a vibe, and coloring allows you to unplug from your electronics.

  3. When you are taking in positive thoughts, there is no room for the negative ones to thrive. Expel that negativity one stroke at a time.

  4. An ultimate state of mindfulness is achieved when we live in the now and focus on the present moment.

  5. A sense of relief occurs in our brain as we reach a meditative state.

I would even argue that coloring is meditation. One thing we know about meditation is that our mind enters a relaxed state during the process because we are training our brain muscles to focus on the present moment. This limits the daily interruptions from our "mind monsters' and other daily distractions.

Sounds pretty cool, right?! Now I am challenging you to put adult coloring to the test, and as a little reward, I will be gifting one lucky reader a couple of bottles of wine from one of my favorite black-owned wine companies just for coloring. Yup, it is that simple.

  1. Download one of the wellness-themed coloring sheets below designed by my fav Val.

  2. Color it and tag @fitxbrit on Instagram. You can post it in your stories or feed.

  3. Each sheet colored is an entry.
