Mind Your Mental: Journaling Through June (Week 1)

I grab my journal whenever I'm feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or confused(this week alone, I know I have journaled at minimum three times a day). Since I started journaling, I've become more connected to my intuition and inner guidance as well as calmer and more centered. Journaling played a massive role in me healing from emotional abuse and cultivating grace - it's taught me to be gentle with myself, something I used to be very, (very!), bad at.

Maybe because it is so powerful, journaling is something a lot of us have some resistance to. Let me guess – writing just isn't your 'thing'? (But maybe it could be!) Or perhaps you 'don't have time'? (Sometimes we have to make time). Or maybe you're not sure where to start? That's where journal prompts come in – acting kind of like a self-interview, they will guide you to write on topics that you might find it a little tricky just to sit down and flow with.

I had the idea of providing journaling prompts for June weekly, and when I presented the idea to my followers, the response was so massive that I knew that people needed it. So here we are...

Journaling Through June: Week 1

Day 1

Affirmation: I have the strength to get through tough times.

Describe a time in your life that you felt was the most difficult? How did you overcome it? What was most helpful for you? Who supported you during this time? What did you learn about yourself?

Action: Think of something that makes you feel powerful or influential. That could be crushing a work out, dominating a video game, studying the bible..whatever it is dedicate 30 minutes to doing that.

Day 2

Affirmation: I choose what I become.

What is your best quality or trait? What is your most undesirable quality or characteristic? How can you transition your undesirable trait and use it for your good? What are your top 3 goals/dreams in life? What does success mean to you, and what is it based on (power, money, status)? What inspires you to want and do better in your life? What's one area you need to work on or improve in to align yourself with the vision you have for your life?

Day 3

Affirmation: I am proud of my growth.

I make myself these ten promises …

Day 4

Affirmation: What I give is what I receive.

An old friend introduced me to this exercise, and it is focused around your "Greatest Day." I want you to write down your ideal day. Who do you want to be with? What do you want to feel? What do you want to do? A simple one-pager. No detail too big or too small, but for this one, you have to leave your heart on the paper. Transparency is key. The challenge that goes with this is to read this aloud EVERY morning. Manifest the life you want.

Day 5

Affirmation: I can make it through anything.

If I had to name one emotion that seems to live deep in my core, it would be? How long have I felt this emotion? Where could it have come from? When I think of this emotion and time of my life, what is my biggest fear? What do I believe I am? What could I begin to do to soften and love this scared part of me? What activities bring me a deep sense of inner calm?

Day 6

Affirmation: I forgive myself and set myself free.

Is there anything I need to let go of that I've been trying to hold on to? Why am I so scared of releasing this? What does this potential loss trigger in me? And how will I benefit if I stop the struggle and just surrender this to the universe?

Day 7

Affirmation: My possibilities are endless.

What is my soul calling out for right now? What do I really need in this moment of my life?

On a regular day, I have to hold space for myself and be intentional about it. So, when trauma triggers become a part of my everyday life, I have to be even more intentional about taking time to recharge so that I still have time to actually "do the work." For me, these days "the work" looks like donating to funds that bailout protestors, making calls to politicians that can make changes happen, registering people to vote, and just being available. But when the feels arise....I stop and create breath for myself. I journal. What prompt are you most excited to try out?
